Best Times of Day to Trade
~3 min

The market is open 24 hours. That doesn’t mean all 24 are worth your time. Let’s find the hours that actually pay.

You now know the four sessions and how they hand the market from one city to the next. So here’s the natural next question: if you can only sit down for a couple of hours, which hours should they be?

There’s no magic clock that prints money. But there is a rule so simple it almost feels like cheating: trade when the crowd shows up.

Follow the volume. Everything good about trading gets easier when the market is busy.

Follow the volume

When is high, three good things happen at once. Price actually moves, so there’s something to trade. tighten, so it costs you less to get in and out. And the setups you’ve learned tend to play out cleaner instead of stalling halfway.

When volume is low, all three flip. Price drifts sideways, spreads widen, and every trade turns into a wrestling match. You can technically trade a quiet market — but you’re working twice as hard for half the reward.

📊 Volume ≈ opportunity

More volume means more players putting real money to work. That’s exactly the environment where clean, tradeable moves are born. Quiet markets don’t hand out many of those.

The overlap is prime time

So when does volume peak? During the London–New York overlap — the few hours where Europe and North America are both trading at full tilt. This is the deepest of the day and the home of its biggest, cleanest moves. If you had to pick one window, this is it.

The 24-hour clock — the London–New York overlap is the loudest stretch of the day.

Now the other end of the spectrum: the dead hours. Late in the Asian session, and after New York shuts down, the market goes quiet. Moves get small and choppy, spreads creep wider, and good setups get rare. These aren’t evil hours — they’re just slow ones.

🎉 The party and the after-party

Think of the overlap as the party — packed, loud, full of energy. The dead hours are the after-party at 4am: a few stragglers, no music, and nothing much happening. Show up for the party.

But trade on your own clock

Here’s the honest catch: the “best” window on paper might land at 3am where you live. And a strategy you can only follow half-asleep isn’t a strategy — it’s a coin flip.

So match your trading to the session that’s awake when you actually are. If you can only trade in the evening, build your routine around whichever session is live then. Consistency you can sustain beats “perfect” hours you’ll burn out chasing.

💡 Pick a lane and stay in it

Choose one session that fits your life and learn its rhythm inside out. A trader who knows one window deeply will out-perform one who groggily chases all of them.

So: trade the busy hours, skip the dead ones, and pick a window you can actually show up for. Next we’ll widen the lens from hours to days — because the calendar has a rhythm too.
