A dividend is a scheduled cash handout

Many companies pay shareholders a slice of profits each quarter — the dividend. To receive it you must OWN the stock by a specific cutoff called the ex-dividend date. Own it the day before ex-div, you get paid. Buy it on ex-div day, you miss this round. Options do not pay dividends, but they are deeply affected by them.
