Rent out shares you do not actually own

A classic covered call needs 100 real shares — often tens of thousands of dollars. The poor man's covered call swaps those shares for a deep-in-the-money LEAPS call, then sells a short-term call against it for income. Same rent-collecting idea, a fraction of the cash. That is why it earns the "poor man's" nickname.
